Редкий человек не знает, что все машины в Великобритании ездят по левой стороне дороги. Русскому человеку очень трудно быстро перестроиться, но в плотном потоке машин трудно сбиться, и постепенно всё и в голове становится на свою сторону.
В сегодняшнем видео Наташа расскажет вам, как же так получилось, что весь мир ездит по правой стороне дороги, а англичане пошли своим, особенным путём. Вместе с Наташей заглянем в глубину веков, во времена странствующих рыцарей, когда о машинах ещё и “думать не знали”.
Мимоходом вспомним левшу Наполеона и прямиком отправимся в Америку, которая, вроде как, и говорит по-английски, но камень за пазухой припрятала. Дружба – дружбой, а руль в машине пристроили совсем с другой стороны, не как в Англии! А за Америкой порулили и все остальные…
Великобритания не осталась в гордом одиночестве, с левой стороны дороги ездят и в других концах света – в Австралии и в Новой Зеландии, в Пакистане, на Кипре и на Мальте, в Японии и на Ямайке.
И это ещё неполный список. В нём не так много стран, как с американской стороны, но всё же достаточно, так, что даже совсем недавно – в 2009 году – британский список пополнился очередной страной. Независимое государство Самоа, расположенное в южной части Тихого океана, решило переметнуться в лагерь с левосторонним движением. Главным образом, из экономии – японские машины славятся своей надежностью и доступны по цене.

Why do we drive on the left side of the road in England, when the rest of the world drives on the right?
This is a bit of a trick question, as over 50 countries drive on the left, including the Commonwealth countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Jamaica, but also including Japan and Indonesia.
Up to the late 1700's, everybody travelled on the left side of the road because it's the sensible option for violent societies of mostly right-handed people.
Jousting knights with their lances under their right arm naturally passed each other on the right, and if you passed a stranger on the road you walked on the left to ensure that your protective sword arm was between yourself and him.
However, during French Revolution things started to change. A change was carried out all over continental Europe by Napoleon. The reason it changed under Napoleon was because he was left-handed, his armies had to march on the right so he could keep his sword arm between him and any opponent.
From then on, any part of the world which was at some time part of the British Empire was driving on the left hand side and any part colonised by the French was driving on the right hand side.
In America the British Empire lost the battle. There were so many countries driving on the right side of the road like the French, Spanish and Portuguese, so the British were a minority in shaping the “traffic”.
The drive-on-the-right policy was adopted by the USA, which was anxious to cast off all remaining links with its British colonial past.
Once America started to drive on the right, other countries started to follow. If you wanted a good reliable vehicle, you bought an American, for a period they only manufactured right-handed vehicles.
From then on many countries changed out of necessity.
Today, the EU would like Britain to fall in line with the rest of Europe, but this is no longer possible. It would cost billions of pounds to change everything around.
The last European country to convert to driving on the right was Sweden in 1967. While everyone was getting used to the new system, they paid more attention and took more care, resulting in a reduction of the number of road accidents.
Only one country in the world has converted to driving on the left in recent years.
Since September 2009 Samoa drives on the left instead of the right.
The main reason for this is that they wanted to drive right-hand cars, for instance from Japan and New Zealand, which both drive on the left.
That is it. Now you know why the British drive on the left hand side of the road.
