Hello, friends! Natasha is here again.
For centuries, the colourful, glowing red lanterns of China have inspired artists, historians, travellers, and local people.
Chinese customs and Chinese culture has spread around the world.
We have a big Chinese community here in Birmingham. Third year in a row Birmingham enjoys the Magical Lantern Festival.
I would like to invite you to visit that beautiful light display in our Botanical Gardens with me.
Chinese lanterns are more than just a beautiful site though — they have deep historical roots that have been passed down from generation to generation.
While you are watching all these colourful installations, I will present you with Chinese words of wisdom.
If small holes aren't fixed, then big holes will bring hardship.
This proverb tells us that if a trivial problem is not solved in time, it will become a serious and knotty one. Similar to: "A stitch in time saves nine."
Water flows in only to flow out.
This proverb points out that: things reverse when they reach their extremes.
When entering a locality follow the local customs.
It is like: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
A candle lights others and consumes itself.
This refers to self-sacrifice for the benefit of others.
While some are happy, some are anxious.
It means: one man's disaster is another man's delight.
With truth on your side, you can go anywhere; without truth, you can't take a step.
This stresses the fact that if you are right it will see you through all difficulties, but without it your progress will be difficult from the very start.
Punish those before to prevent those after.
It means - learn from past mistakes to avoid future ones.
So here is a great collection of Chinese sayings which might help you in understanding Chinese people's attitudes, life, and values.
I’m sure you found lots of them very familiar as this wisdom is common to all nationalities.
