Prince George wearing shorts all the time

Hello, friends! I’m glad to be with you again.

I’ve just read some interesting information which I’ve decided to share with you.

You know that here in Britain we have the Royal family. You know that we have the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William and others.

You also know that Prince William married Kate Middleton and they had two children: Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Prince George, as all children of his age, is adorable. His Royal duties are all in a distant future, but at the moment he enjoys his childhood.

We've seen Prince George on a number of occasions now – at public engagements and in official photographs. But there's one thing that people have noticed about the little royal: he only ever wears shorts.

Do you know why? I’m going to explain it to you now.

According to all etiquette experts there is a very good reason for this - and it's nothing to do with fashion.

It’s a royal and aristocratic tradition.

It's a very British thing to dress a young boy in shorts. Trousers are for older boys and men, and shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have here in Britain.

Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class – quite suburban. And no self-respecting aristocrat or royal would want to be considered suburban.

The tradition can be traced back through the royal family, with both Princes William and Harry regularly seen wearing shorts until they were considered old enough to progress to full-length trousers.

This is, historically, perhaps due to the practice of 'breeching', which dates back to the sixteenth century.

A newborn boy would be dressed in a gown for their first year or two.

These gowns have survived as the modern christening robe.

Then he was 'breeched' and wore articles of clothing that were similar to modern shorts.

Breeching was an important event in the life of a boy. They looked forward to it with much excitement, and often celebrated with a small party.

The change was probably made once boys had reached the age when they could easily undo the rather complicated fastenings of many early modern breeches and trousers.

The usual custom in more modern times is that a boy graduates to trousers around the age of eight-years-old.

The modern habit of upper class families choosing to dress their boys in shorts belongs to a bygone age. The British upper class are usually keen to hold on to traditions, and this one also silently marks them out from 'the rest'.

I think that in the case of William and Kate, the decision to dress George in shorts is more likely down to tradition than a class issue.

So this is all what you might need to know about history of breeching and why little Prince George is always seen wearing shorts rather than long trousers.

I hope to present you with my new videos soon. Please remember to subscribe to my channel if you are not with us already.

Goodbye for now.
